Linseed is by far the richest source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the parent compound of the omega-3 fatty acids. In comparison, fish contain only trace amounts of ALA and fish oil can adversely affect the taste and odor of food products. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid because it cannot be synthesized by the body, almost everyone recommends an increased daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed is the seed from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), which is a member of the Linaceae family and is a source of both oil and fiber.
Added to numerous recipes will enhance the flavour and dietary value of your food, or just enjoy straight from the packet. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons to your breakfast cereal or yoghurt. Add to your baking when making biscuits, bread or scones.
